Welcome!

On this blog, you will find a growing collection of my own juicing recipes that I have invented specifically for IBS sufferers (although they're great for other people, too). I've had IBS-D for seven years, but I've only recently started juicing to help ensure that I am getting enough nutrients. Juicing is an excellent way to supply your body with plenty of vitamins and minerals, something that IBS sufferers, particularly those with IBS-D, often struggle to do. Those of us with IBS often have very limited diets because many foods are too fibrous for us to digest, or trigger IBS attacks for a variety of other reasons. We end up avoiding many of the fruits and vegetables that our body needs. Read more about why I recommend juicing for IBS sufferers in my Introduction to Juicing for IBS, and please consider contributing to this collection of juicing recipes!

Juicing Resources

If you're new to juicing, the first book I would recommend is The Everything Juicing Book by Carole Jacobs, Patrice Johnson and Nicole Cormier.  It reads a little bit like an infomercial because the authors are so ecstatic about the benefits of juicing, but this is such a great resource that it has become my nutrition bible.  I cannot say enough good things about this book.  Many of the 150 juice recipes themselves are extremely simple, with only two or three ingredients, which can be a great place to start for beginning juicers.  There are other recipes that have four to six ingredients, though, so there is a nice variety.  Ultimately, though, I'm recommending this book for all the nutritional information that is included.  You'll learn more about the benefits of eating specific fruits and vegetables from this book then most of the other resources that I've encountered, and the information is all presented in a way that is easy to understand.

Once you get past the introductory chapters, which help guide you through the history of juicing, buying a juicer, the benefits of organic produce, etc., the chapters that I consider to be most helpful include: Basic Juicing Ingredients, Juicing for Weight Loss, Juice Fasting, Juice Detoxing and Cleansing, Juicing for Increased Happiness and Mental Stability, Juicing for Anti-Aging and Longevity, Juicing for Beautiful Skin, Hair and Nails, Juicing for Stronger Bones, Juicing for Energy and Stamina, Juicing for Better Breathing, Juicing for Fighting Infections, Juicing to Help Your Digestive Disorders, Juicing for Cancer Prevention and Treatment, and Perfect Juices for People with Diabetes.

Ironically, even though I'm recommending this book specifically for IBS sufferers, the section on Dealing with Diarrhea in the Chapter on Juicing to Help Your Digestive Disorders is actually a bit disappointing.  There's very few suggestions that are specific to IBS.  But I would guess that this is at least in part because, as I note in my Introduction to Juicing for IBS, every IBS sufferer has different triggers.  It would be difficult for the authors of a generalized juicing book to provide a short yet comprehensive guide to what may or may not be good ingredients for an IBS sufferer to attempt to juice (yet that is the challenge I am taking on in this blog).  As an IBS sufferer with specific triggers, you can still use this book by learning as much as you can about nutrition in general, figuring out which fruits and vegetables provide the nutrients you are lacking, and testing the recipes that are included throughout this book, on this blog, and any other recipes that you find.  Even though there isn't much of a focus on IBS in this book, it's a great resource for all of us!

The Giant Everything Juicing Book, which I don't personally own, is an expansion of the above book and would probably be the better investment if you're serious about juicing.

Looking for inspiration to juice?  Or proof that it works for weight loss and improving your overall health?  Check out the documentary Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, which follows the journey of several men as they "re-set" their bodies through juice fasting.  For Joe and Phil, both of whom have an auto-immune disorder and have been taking tons of medications for years, juicing is literally a life-saver.  Over the course of the documentary, Joe loses 90 pounds and Phil loses more than 200 pounds, the symptoms of their auto-immune disorder clear up, and they are both able to eventually stop taking the host of prescription medications that they have been on for years.

Of course, neither one of them has a digestive illness like IBS, which makes juicing a little more challenging for some of us.  Keep in mind that as an IBS sufferer, you shouldn't actually do a juice fast.  Your digestive system most likely won't be able to handle a switch-over to an all fruits and veggies diet.  You need to keep a good amount of soluable fiber in your diet.  Most of the time, I would recommend juicing once a day for IBS sufferers.  Even so, this documentary makes clear the across-the-board benefits of juicing, which has convinced me that juicing is worth the extra effort for those of us with IBS.  Once you figure out what fruits and veggies you can safely juice and which fruits and veggies trigger your IBS, you can start to see an overall improvement in your health, just like the guys in this film.  Check it out!

Learn more about Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead on Joe Cross's website, where you can join the "Reboot Your Life" Community.  Joe's website will also link you to Netflix and Hulu, where you can watch Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead for free!

As I come across other juicing books and websites, I plan on adding suggestions and reviews of other resources that I find useful in juicing, so check back!
